Definition and Causes of Flat Feet in Children
Flat feet, also known as fallen arches, is a condition where the arch of the foot does not develop properly, causing the entire sole to touch the ground. In children, this condition is quite common and can be temporary as their feet often develop arches as they grow. However, in some cases, flat feet persist into adulthood. The causes of flat feet in children can vary. In many instances, it is due to genetic factors, as children may inherit the condition from their parents. Additionally, conditions such as obesity, muscle weakness, or ligament laxity can contribute to the development of flat feet. In rare cases, flat feet can be associated with other medical conditions, like cerebral palsy or Down syndrome. Tips for Keeping Children's Feet Healthy
- Make sure their shoes fit properly
- Look for any signs of in-toeing or out-toeing
- Check to see if they have Clubfoot (condition that affects your child’s foot and ankle, twisting the heel and toes inward) which is one of the most common nonmajor birth defects.
- Lightly cover your baby’s feet (Tight covers may keep your baby from moving their feet freely, and could prevent normal development)
- Allow your toddler to go shoeless (Shoes can be restricting for a young child’s foot)
- Cut toenails straight across to avoid ingrown toenails
- Keep your child’s foot clean and dry
- Cover cuts and scrapes. Wash any scratches with soap and water and cover them with a bandage until they’ve healed.
